Looks like the body is from a helicopter, like a Sikorsky S-58/H-34 or Westland Wessex!

Wasn’t able to post the link, but Jay Leno has a 1931 Shotwell in his collection that has a really interesting story behind it.

OK, if you are tired of waiting for your Aptera, here’s something similar for sale. So what if it’s missing an engine and drivetrain…

The Scottish distant cousin of the Aptera..with wheel pants. The Lutz Pathfinder. I saw this in person from my recent visit to Edinburgh last Oct, at the National Museums Scotland (sorry my iPhone pic file is too big to post here, so..).

    1930s, “Businessman’s Coupe”

    Wikipedia:

    Business coupe

A two-door car with no rear seat or with a removable rear seat intended for traveling salespeople and other vendors carrying their wares with them. American manufacturers developed this style of coupe in the late 1930s.[49]

Haven’t seen my all time favorite…

    Subaru Justy 4×4.

Had one. It was like a Mini with a leather heart that would go anywhere.

5 speed manual. High and low range.

Paid $8000 and it’s the only new car I ever bought. Sold it with 355,000 miles on it. Buyer drove it from NC to California. No AC.

    38-45 mpg without really trying.

The first generation Honda Insight is an easy to notice “ancestor” of the Aptera’s design. I wanted one so badly when they came out, but I was basically a kid without the means to get something like that at the time. And then they went out of production. Everything is an SUV now and almost nobody is making vehicles to improve aerodynamics and efficiency anymore.

I was sponsored on a project via Dr Paul MacCready at AeroViroment in the mid 1990’s. I recall the EV1 at the S. CA facility. My project later got co-sponsored by GM with AeroVironment and I worked with the same team working on the GM Impact while at the Warren, MI, R&D facility. I still have one of the advertisement brochures for the car, and a signed book about the EV project.

I was sad when GM recalled all of the EVs and crushed them at the Proving Grounds in Mesa AZ, where I was later running speed records on my project. I can on only think if they had kept that early EV momentum. MacCready had the insight to see around corners. I am certain he would champion the Aptera and the solar EV approach today.

I had a 1969 Opel GT, and a 1983 Porsche 944. Also, a 1985 Saab 900 S, not a 2-seater, but enough for my kids in the back when they were young. I have also had a few other larger cars, but a diesel VW’s that got excellent gas milage. I have driven lots of miles, and the Mercedes diesels were pretty amazing. back in the late 70’s and early 80’s they outlasted the bodies of the cars and were built to just keep running.

Chris, I’ve been following in your footsteps. I had a couple of the same cars you did including several MB diesels that I ran on veggie oil.
