Toyota is forming a joint venture for EV Development with BYD a Chinese EV maker and battery manufacturer. Saw this being negotiated at a recent visit to BYD in Shenzhen. So a lot of what is said to be “Toyota” is really BYD. Toyota needs BYD’s help to recover from their EV denial. Perhaps a little late to market as other manufacturers have product in the market or soon to be in the market (2022) The roadsters if built and imported may be a competitor for Aptera.
I really wonder how much these will even be Toyota vehicles or if they will just be rebadged BYD cars with style tweaks (think Pontiac Vibe vs Toyota Matrix). Slap a toyota logo on a Dolphin EA1 and it will sell but chinese brands still carry some stigma. White labeling isn’t new and this kind of partnership could be the way the “chinese wave” Sandy Monroe predicted being a little more stealthy. This can also be a way to bypass tariffs by doing just enough assembly outside china.
Given how slow/reluctant Toyota was to start and how aggressive their plans at a minimum I expect BYD powertrains. BYD and CATL are both in absolutely incredible positions for insane growth as the entire industry leans on them.
