Lightyear has shown their production intent vehicle, it was formerly called the One but now it’s the 0 which is the number they are likely to sell. It’s priced at 250,000 Euros, has the same solar range as the Aptera but at 10X the price, the performance of Prius, and 388 miles of range WLTP so maybe 350 miles EPA. For that amount of money you could buy an Mercedes EQS or a Lucid Air, cover your roof with solar panels and have money left over to buy the 1000 mile Aptera. The Lightyear people seemed to be a company that understood solar cars but coming out with a 250,000 Euro car with such poor specs is worse than coming out with nothing because it will taint their future efforts.

10 times the price for 2.5 times the passenger space. But it looks like a car!

I didn’t think lucid would sell a single car at $175,000. But they did. There a lot of people with more money than brains. Some of them post on these boards

The Lucid and the EQS are high end luxury cars, personally I think spending as much as a house on a depreciating asset like a car is crazy but there is a real market for vehicles in that class so who am I to say, and at least the massaging seats in those cars can give you a happy ending. The Lightyear 0 is $100K more than those cars, it’s even more than a Bentley. The Lightyear is decidedly not a luxury car, it’s only claim to fame is that it has some solar panels slapped on it. But unlike Aptera which pulled out all the stops to design an ultra efficient vehicle so that they could get a usable amount of solar range using a small number of solar panels, the Lightyear just put a large number of solar cells on a fairly conventional vehicle to get the same range as the Aptera. That’s dumb range, no different than putting in a huge battery to get range. The mid-spec Aptera, 40KWh, get’s more range than the Lightyear 0 and the same solar range. But Aptera did it by designing a vehicle that weighs half of what the Lightyear does and has a much lower CoD. The 2WD Aptera is also twice as quick as the Lightyear, the AWD Aptera is almost three times as quick and it should be noted that the AWD option on the Aptera costs 1% of the Lightyear’s price.

From the sound of it, there are also posters with neither. Glad I have, at least, money.

The Lightyear does look to be a viable option until you see the completely ridiculous cost. It does have more seating but not much else going for it.

At 1/3rd of the price there would be some interest but at 200K Euros it’s inconceivable that anyone would purchase it. Aside from having solar panels there is nothing innovative about it. It has the same CoD as the EQS, about the same weight as a Model 3 RWD and exactly the same efficiency as the Model 3, 4.4 miles per KWh. It has 20% less horsepower than the Aptera FWD while weighing twice as much.

Lightyear announced last year that they were developing a much cheaper car, they should have waited for that car rather than shipping this one. The 0 won’t bring in any revenue and it destroys their credibility so it will do nothing to help the viability of their company.

@Joshua Rosen – the first 500 Lightyears were offered at $120K and the entire run sold out. Like Tesla (and many other start-up mfr’s) Lightyear is starting with an expensive halo car to finance later vehicles and production ramp-up. It took a lot $110K Roadsters to finance the $58K Model S and a great many Model S and X to finance the Model 3.

Your opinion without doing research. They have already pre-sold a bunch! I don’t think a vehicle company would make it with you as a business strategist. Stick to being a individual technical contributor and leave the strategy advice to those with qualifications and experience

Yes, you could buy more seating in solar EVs by buying multiple Aptera for the same money. Now we just need the software to turn them into a train! 😎

This video does a pretty nice job of comparing the Aptera, Sion and Lightyear. He compares the effectiveness of the solar cells over the year. The Sion is terrible, no surprise there because they put solar panels on their doors, but whats interesting is that over the course of the year the Aptera does better than the Lightyear and much better during the winter months.
