    Hi everyone,

Think I remember hearing about shark skin wrapping that is used in the nautical industry to reduce drag. Is that also a thing in the automotive sector and did the aptera team have a look into it? Maybe it allows to further lower the aptera’s drag coefficient a bit…

    BR,

It has been, so far, just a minor thing in solar car racing. Vattenfall Solar Team (now Brunel Solar Team) claim’s to have used some on one or more of their recent vehicles. It looks like the material was provided by “Bionic Surface Technologies” in Germany.

General consensus in the nautical community is a boat that is wet hand sanded to 2000 or 4000 grit in the direction of water flow and NOT waxed is the fastest. Dust on the boat from towing it is a big no-no and needs to be scrubbed off if you want to go fast.

In aerospace they seem mostly worried about just keeping things clean and reducing drag with flush rivets, laminar flow, etc. Any surface friction gains would probably only be possible when aptera is clean and would be a few percent at most…

But here’s the thing. To the best of my knowledge all of what you have said is true and many a skeptic in solar racing thought essentially the same things about explicit anti-reflective surface treatments (on the solar modules) but then rather creative folk have risen to the occasion and developed non-soiling varieties.

Agreed, by the way, on the “few percent at most…” thing. Those few percent can be critical in racing but pointless otherwise.
