Tesla with Laser Windshield Wipers
-
Tesla has applied for a patent for laser windshield wipers! Also can be used to clean solar cells on a Tesla solar array. ******* Edited URL should work now when clicked **********

Makes way more sense for solar panels than for a windshield. The real question is what would happen if you set your hand into the directed beam
-
HMMM…Maybe we should have some Tesla fanatics’ test it out for us.

old forum windshield wiper thread had design that allowed better wipers. teslas other wiper patent was magnet based but i doubt that will be good against being stolen easily or moved by heavy debris liek hail. this laser sounds like its supposed to burn stuff out of the way and evaporate rain, and the burning would have to be not fire causing guarantee (like a cigar blunt that could light grass on fire if its burning too much) . it would probably be a array of laser rather than robotic turrets behind a layer of transparent material so the turret joints dont get stuck b/c of larger debris that cant be simply burnt.
very difficult to do, looks like shitpost to make potential investors hope they have a trick in store when market pushes them to innovate more

I wonder if the beta will have windshield wiper(s).

For any rain i encounter, I use Rain-X. i rear-wiper delete ALL vehicles for weight savings. whether i’m in rainy Michigan or sunny Arizona. if you see a car go by you in a rainstorm with NO WIPERS ON….that’s ME. ???? It would be great to not have wipers on my “clean” aero Aptera. i understand the legal requirement but find them to be a mechanical “distraction” at best.

do those things keep water from sticking at low speed? do they wash off?

I use Adam’s Ceramic coating on my windshield and do not use my wipers in the rain after about 45 mph on both of my VW’s and Ford Raptor.

I really wonder how well this can handle substantial snowfall. The amount I’ve seen drop when coming from the ski hill can be pretty substantial. You can also get big snow lumps dumping on the car when it starts to melt in spring.

rain-x washes off over time and is a hydro-phobic coating. angle of windshield and speed > 25 mph make a difference. Rain-x doesnt work in freezing temps as water physics change < 32 F. solids build-up instead of blowing off. wipers will probably always be a legal requirement unless the laser thing takes off or heated windshields get more prevalent. ????
