Windshield washer fluid?
Posted by Mangoat on February 15, 2023 at 7:22 amWe know the Aptera has a windshield wiper. We also know the hood can be removed, but more for maintenance. I don’t think it is user removable? Believe they said the average user won’t need to remove it. I assume it uses windshield washer fluid to keep the windshield clean. How will we be refilling that?

Windshield washer fluid?

I had heard ( not read ) the hood would open like a conventional clam shell type hood (?)
I have only seen Noir, in their old San Diego studio location, with the hood taken off.
This is a very old photo from one of the early development vehicles but we have been told “ No Frunk” just a “bunk” below the cargo area…
Time will tell!

According to Aptera’s Jason Hill in an interview by Steve Lee of Aptera Owners Club, the hood is not intended to be opened except for unusual internal maintenance needs. For reference, you can go to 17:34 at https://youtu.be/xjIIlOPGf4Y?t=1054.

My guess is that is where the HVAC etc will be going.
So therefore we do not know where the wiper fluid will be topped up. While we wait for official info, my prediction is a fill port in the gap between the body and the windscreen, where the windscreen wiper sits. There should be enough room IMO. It is also possible that it might be filled up via a port in the cabin, but I think that is less likely (to avoid spills, etc).

Jason DOES say that the hood is hinged so I’m guessing he simply forgot about washer fluid when he suggested that owners wouldn’t have any reason to open the hood: He’s the designer, not one of the engineers…

The windscreen wash does not necessarily need to be added by opening the hood. I don’t need to open the hood to add it to my car (on mine there is a service port for checking + topping up both the oil and windscreen wash).
If I recall correctly, he said it wouldn’t need to be opened up “routinely”. Personally I would categorise adding windscreen wash as a routine operation.

Its a good catch. If the primary hood section isnt meant to be opened like a normal car then perhaps the flat could be under the grey section that previously had the logo. Alternatively since we don’t have a traditional engine the firewall could have a hose and it could be filled from the interior (kinda weird but no reason why not)

From the tailosive interview jason hill was clear that the mechanism to top up the wiper fluid is creative… now I’m curious
