1. Stability at High Speeds: Will the three-wheel design be stable in high winds on a freeway?

Aptera is lightweight, there’s no question about that. At around 2,000lbs, you’re driving the most efficient form of transportation on the planet. Because of this, and understandably so, people wonder whether Aptera will generate lift at speed – or take off, like an aircraft. We’re here to tell you that, with our advanced aerodynamic shape, you will slip through semi-truck turbulence seamlessly and safely, as Aptera maintains its composure without generating lift. At high speeds, the vehicle maintains a negligible amount of lift or downforce, with approximately 25 pounds of downforce at 65MPH. 

2. Durability and Replaceability of Solar Panels: What if the solar panels are damaged?

Solar panels are a critical component of Aptera’s innovative design and sustainably enhanced driving experience. We have meticulously engineered our solar panels to be robust, resilient, and capable of withstanding extreme environmental conditions. Our solar panels are designed to preserve the ability to generate power even in the unlikely event that a particular solar cell cracks or breaks. Replacement of a severely damaged solar panel will be quick and hassle-free, just like replacing a windshield.

We prioritize sustainability in every aspect of our vehicle, and this extends to the lifecycle of our solar panels, and a future where faulty panels are sent to a recycling company. These specialized facilities will carefully separate the laminated parts and recycle the materials that can be reused, minimizing waste and promoting a circular economy. 

3. Keeping Cool and Protected: How will the interior and exterior stay cool and protected from the sun when parked outside?

Aptera is designed to withstand extreme heat conditions, both inside and out. We perform rigorous testing to ensure your comfort and the vehicle’s durability, even during scorching summers. To safeguard against heat damage, our exterior features, an SMC-fiber body, and solar panels will minimize the impact of high temperatures.

Inside the vehicle, Aptera’s construction provides excellent insulation. Coupled with a robust air conditioning and ventilation system, you can enjoy a cool and comfortable interior. The solar power system maintains ambient temperatures while parked, ensuring a refreshing experience when you return, even on blistering summer days. With Aptera, you can confidently leave your vehicle parked outside, knowing that both the exterior and interior are well-protected from the heat of the sun. 

4. Secure Storage: How will you keep objects from moving around in the cargo area?

In the rear cargo, Aptera will have six tie-downs — four for separation between the cargo area and the seats. We will offer a high-strength cargo net and dividers to shield the luggage space and the cabin. There are plenty of aftermarket possibilities to explore as well.

For those preparing for their new lifestyle in Aptera and the daily adventures they will go on, the length between the back of the seats to the end of the rear cargo is about 70 inches. If you lay the seats forward, you have about 7.5ft. If you lay something horizontally, with someone in the passenger seat, you can fit something that is ~ 8.5ft. long. The width of the rear cargo behind the seats is just under 4ft. 

5. Optimal Charging & Battery Management: How will the vehicle use solar power when it’s already at full charge?

We are developing an intelligent system that will optimize charging to maintain the battery capacity and life — you should not have to worry about replacing the battery or battery cells for at least ten years. Our smart software system optimizes charging, maintains battery capacity and life, and the built-in solar power trickles down to charge your battery pack within the optimal charge percentage.  

There will be a control in place, a set predefined max charge level, such as ~85% (pending further testing), to manage the battery charge state and prevent overcharge and stress to the battery. Our vehicles will undergo extensive testing and validation to ensure that they are capable of handling various driving conditions, including long-distance trips. The battery management system in your Aptera will manage the charging process, so you can enjoy your adventure or road trip and focus on having a fantastic journey.
